Menston and Burley Bereavement Care Service starts up.
This new service is run by trained volunteers to provide sensitive and confidential support for those experiencing grief, whether the loss has just happened or has occurred some time ago.
There is no charge, visits are made to individuals at home at their request and the Service is available to anyone living in the two villages . The Service is non denominational, but we thank the two Churches who have enabled a drop in service to be provided at:
Cornerstones, Main St., Menston, Tuesdays 10.00-noon
St Mary's Parish Centre, Station Rd., Burley, Tuesdays 14.30-16.00.
Contact Margaret 01943 872 807 or 07511 752 057 - Menston ring Janet 872320 - Burley ring Ann 600611 or Janet 862582
The aim of the team is to provide help for those experincing loss, both by reaching out by a telephone call to the nearest relative where there has been a funeral in Menston or Burley and offering their help, or responding to requests for help. They work through listening, enabling individuals to talk about their experiences and feelings in confidence, helping them to understand what they are going through and encouraging them to come to terms with what has happened and make necessary adjustments to their lives. The team may also offer practical information and assistance.
Margaret Christelow had the following to say about their expertise "Our training is based on a training package purchased from Cruse, the major bereavement care charity, and consists of 6 two and a half hour sessions. Trainers are a qualified social worker (retired Assistant Director Leeds Social Service Dept) and myself, qualifed medical social worker ( retired head of medical social work, East Leeds, and organiser bereavement care at Wheatfields Hospice.) Selection is made prior to training; no examination but guidance given at the end of the interactive training if candidates are not thought to be suitable."
The volunteer team support each other, Margaret said "The bereavement visitors are linked to an experienced bereavement visitor ( one qualified with Bradford Bereavement Support, the other a qualified counsellor working in private practice) who provides advice and support, and small group meetings to confidentially discuss how best to help individuals. I expect to be informed of any major concerns, which may require medical help."
