I attended a meeting of the Burley Scout and Guides group last night and you will be pleased to know that we voted to hold another bonfire night next year (provisional date 6th November 2010). Whilst there are still concerns about safety it was felt that with more marshals and a better police presence these could be overcome.
I'll keep people informed and no doubt will ask if anyone would like to help nearer the time. Lets hope we can bring this popular event back to Burley.

It may be a good idea this next bonfire night to rename the Guy Fawkes after the PC Wallies ect, perhaps we could run a competition for the most apt re-name, OH! I forgot we may have to take out special insurance to run it.

Or the earlier threat from last year
Gave me an opportunity to merge the two threads though - so thanks
Yes - the Scout and Guide Bonfire Night is back on, on the 6th November - Fire being lit and 7pm and fireworks starting at 7.30pm.
To be honest we couldn't afford not to run it this year as it's our main source of income for the Scout and Guide Hut and we missed it last year. however we have a lot more marshals and fencing this year so I hope we shall not have any trouble. We leafleted all the residence who back onto the Scout Field to let them know what we were doing and we had no objections.
More details will be going out in the Parish Newsletter and no doubt we'll put something in the Ilkley Gazette.
I'll keep you posted
Of course if anyone want to help they can always PM - we'd be glad to hear from you.

Just a quick update for you.
The Scout and Guide Bonfire night approaches in less than two weeks (Saturday 6th November).
All planning is going well, as hopefully you will have seen posters designed by one of the cubs going up around the village.
Things kick off around 6.30 at the Scout Hut were we will be selling food and drinks.
The fire will be lit at 7pm followed by the fireworks at 7.30pm
We would still like to hear from anyone wishing to help with rattling buckets and stewarding duties, please pm me for further details or just turn up at the Scout Hut at 6.15pm for your lovely yellow vest!
Lets hope for fine weather and a good turnout to raise funds for the Scouts and Guide groups of Burley. Remember this is our main fund raising event and whilst it's free to come along donation buckets are there to take any change you may have in these hard hitting recessionary times!!
There will also be a display in the Scout Hut giving more information about how important it is for everyone in the village to vote via the BT website to get superfast internet connections into the village (hopefully you'll also have the facility to vote whilst you there so there is no excuse not to!!) See http://www.iburley.com/
Thanks
BK

Why? Guido Fawkes was an old boy and they don't burn former pupils.
There's always Burning the Bartle though.

As an old boy from the school this is true - however whilst we never burnt him on a bonfire it still didn't stop us setting off a few fireworks

Why is having a huge bonfire, or any bonfire, a good, let alone an excellent idea.
The noise scares animals witless, and doesn't do much for the elderly ether. It is a dreadful, antiquated and to many even offensive practise, celebrating a 400+ year old event... Night after night is ruined by bangs and flashes well into the night. Elsewhere on this forum we are told, if I read it right, that schools are forced to take Halal meat so as not to be offensive to our Muslim friends, yet we prolong this stupid November 5 celebration which commemorates the saving of parliament, and the King, from a Catholic plot, and we burn an effigy of a Catholic. Do we care as much about Catholics' feelings as we do about Muslims'? We do not even ask Muslims to eat ordinary meat with the majority, and if we burned an effigy of a Muslim (which I am not suggesting at all, ever) there would be all sorts of trouble, yet we happily, no, excitedly, do of a Catholic.... it does not seem a very balanced approach to me, nothing to do with PC, just about being fair and balanced. And kind and considerate to animals, which are not, as someone has posted "further down the chain" but all God's creatures, like us.
Now, don't get me going on the sheer idiocy of "trick or treat" which is upon us, knocking on strangers' doors asking for sweets.... Crazy!!
