As a fellow resident of Peel Place... For me it's just been a good chance to meet up with friends and enjoy the fireworks and I missed it the other year, though this year a combination of iBurley and volunteering to help will keep me busy enough!
I must have missed most of the drunken idiots - I know they tend to come out on friday/saturday night to walk (using that term fairly loosely) across to the new estate... but I haven't seen any problems with the organised display. I'm just pleased it's back on - It will do me no permanent damage to park elsewhere one night of the year!
I for one hope the event stays in Peel Place for as long as I live here; though as I have a for sale sign up, that may not present a problem for those who'd rather it was elsewhere! Just today we were saying it's one of the things we'll really miss if we can move elsewhere in Burley. Peel Place houses, like the street, may be a bit on the compact side but it's hard to beat as a place to live.
I'll just be hoping that once he goes to bed, David (my 18 month old son) will sleep through the bangs and background noise. I think he will, and if not he'll just have to watch the fireworks

I have to agree ... With all the land in Burley why choose the smallest area..surrounded by houses?? Last year was delightful. The field is NOT big enough for all those people, the road leading down to the scout hut is tiny and you feel that you are imposing on the people living in the houses that your alsmost stood in their lounge.. RIDICULOUS... I hope its pouring down so we all get some peace and quiet!

I'm sorry one or two of the residents feel that the location is not appropriate for the Bonfire, we tried very had to ensure that we inconvenience people as little as possible, for example offering alternative car parking to residents so they don't have to risk having cars lent on etc. and ensuring we have enough marshals on together with PCSO's to patrol the area.
The Burley bonfire has been going on for many years and is enjoyed by the vast majority of the village. Whilst the venue is compact and the street narrow it does add to the feeling of community.
We will continue to look for ways to improve safety and enjoyment for all, but inevitably no matter where we hold it there will be some who don't approve.
Please bare in mind that for one night a year the Bonfire is the major fund raiser for the Scouts and Guides in the village and enables our team of dedicated leaders and helpers (all of whom are volunteers) to provide a lot of young people of Burley with lots of activities, events, fun, exercise and citizenship skills to help them grow and contribute to society in a positive way.

Congratulations are in order for the Scouts/guides/Brownies on their raising of £3,000 pounds on bonfire night & putting on a wonderfull fireworks show & bonfire.

The scouts did a good job of clearing up afterwards too which has not always been the case in previous years. The burn't patch looks like it will heal pretty soon and the dog crappers can get back to their stuff.
Maybe we should celebrate more public executions in the village.

I appologise for any typos in this reply as I do not have my glasses on and my touch typing is a little sketchy!
As a resident of Peel Place, I look forward to the bonfire each year. I really missed it last year and the run up to Christmas wasn't the same. Yes 2008 there were a few rowdy people and drunks being a pain, but it's the only time I've really noticed it in all the years I've lived here, 28 and counting. I agreed with the Scout Hut putting parking restrictions on the road and do believe that they should go one step further and close the road, just for a hour before the start and after. Controversal I know but what most people don't see (including some residents we had a 'discussion' with) are the number of cars that try to come down the street to park and watch the display. these as always are non--residents as we know what the street is like and, I can only vouch for myself, always arrive home in plenty of time or park elsewhere in the village. You do know that walking is good for you!!!These cars then are unable to turn round due to the numbers of people down the street and have to reverse back up (rather them than me). I'm sure most of the marshalls can vouch for that?
The person who replied about nights of fireworks going off, well really the Scouts cant be penalised for the actions of others. I love the bonfire and fireworks and long may it continue.
