A result! Thanks to the efforts of the Parish Council, Highways Structures at Bradford Council have now advised that a contractor has been appointed to carry out repairs to The Stones. Work will take place between now and Christmas. Once we have a start date, it will be shown so that those who are interested can go down for a look. The exact nature of what the repairs will be is yet to be determined so may be a little early to celebrate but it is a positive start.

That's excellent news! Well done.

Yes, its certainly not the best time to tackle the stones, and its not going to get much easier as the autumn progresses. I suppose they could have diverted the water down the goit to lower the water at the stones if it weren’t for the work on the hydro scheme.

I am sure many of us will watch the work with interest.

For those of us who can't get down as regularly as we might want, how easy / difficult would it be to set up a webcam?

I'm a bit puzzled by this, is there any way of finding out from Bradford Council on what basis a contractor has been appointed?

For example was it a competitive tender?  In which case the tender document would be available.  There must be some kind of "order of works" document somewhere - detailing what the contractors can & cannot do, what exactly it is they are going to repair etc.

They may have used an existing framework negating the need for a competitive tendering process, and given that it's for 'works' it would fall well short of the European limit but Bradford Council will likely have their own rules on this. You could try googling to find out where they publish their tenders.

An FOI request could be made or maybe Matt could help to get the information if it's really needed? A quick call to them may be all it takes to get the information.

Forget FOI and Matt, give me a few days and I'll contact the various departments and see just what is happening. Trust Sebastian!

I wonder if they have spoken to the anglinjg club as the contractors will need access through the gate with their machinery

I presume they will have to reassure them that whatever materials they wil be using will not pollute the water.

The Environmental Agency will prosecute them if they don't follow procedure. They will need a raft of reports before the work can proceed. It's unlikely anything will be done until summer, the conditions down there aren't conducive to good health and safety now, never mind in the winter months to come. Basically they will redirect the river using sandbags away from individual stones.

The hydro works will have little affect on water levels.

Just awaiting someone coming off their hols.
However looking back at my notes I see there
are three stones somewhere in the centre which
are to be repaired. That's all at the moment.

As Matt is a Bradford Councillor and on the Parish Council can he not get specifics on what is happening to update the Parish Council itself and the rest of us?

I know from experiance from the past thirty years spyglass there's times when even our Councillors, District or otherwise, can't get the info they would like.

If a Bradford District Councillor cannot get information out of Bradford Council then what is the point of having them? Are Bradford Council staff not answerable to the Councillors and through them to us all? Is the tail wagging the dog? Is the monkey grinding the organ?

Matt, are you able to update on the works taking place down there? I would be interested to hear about the repairs to the stones and also hydro scheme if possible.

I flew over the Hydro site on Thursday and saw a huge concrete apron where the outfall, couldn't see if it goes all the way to the river. No building as yet, some big piles of stones and a track leading from the mill.

The river was up this morning when I went for my morning run and it's rained for most of the day, repairs will be impossible to the stones till spring or summer.

Many thanks for the update, that’s really useful and certainly fits in with my observations last week of concrete being laid, although I don’t think I had such a great view as you :)

I really wanted to get down to the river today to take a look at the level and how accessible the stones may have been but circumstances conspired against me. I can’t imagine how any work could be done this side of spring unless the water was taken down the Goit, but given the hydro work and amount of work needed to clear the channel, I assume that’s not an option right now.

I really hope a photographic record is being kept of the works at the hydro site as it would be great to see what’s going on :)
