Of the 238 current membership of the Wharfedale Forums - 130 have joined, but have never posted. Why?

What's the point of signing up if your not going to contribute?

Zero posters distort the figures for the popularity of the Wharfedale Forums & in turn the viability of the whole enterprise.

I fully agree with you.

How can one have decent debates if half the 'house' aren't interested.

Perhaps Mr Matt should offer a title to those who regularly post,
much like the chap who runs that website in Ilkley. No need to
get complicated, just a bit of carrot and stick.

How many times are forum statistics called for, very rarely, & for what.
Members who don't post on a regular basis do read the forums to keep abreast of things & will probably post when something in particular strikes them or hasn't been already covered.
And then there are people who feel that they must post on every subject that comes on a forum.
All are welcome, we do not discriminate.

Sponsors of forums - use the stats to decide if they should hand over their money. No point sponsoring a forum that has very few active members - i.e. too many Zero Posters.

I don't have an issue with people just reading the forum. You don't need to be a member to do that. Or those who've posted only rarely. They have at least joined & posted. i.e. are not Zero Posters.

And if it wasn't for the multiple posters, the Wharfedale forums would be dead in the water.

But why join - create a user name, hand over email details & then never post?

Catbazza - You're in favour of shutting down little used forums - why? Fewer sections would mean even less chance of people finding a subject to post on.

Yes I did vote in favour for financial reasons only, pehaps just the odd forum such as the For Sale or Wanted which is very little used & are taken care of elsewhere.

As for the other thing you mention how do you know that the non posters are not going to post, are you going to put a clause in the membership rules that you must contribute to discussions, there are quite a lot of items on these forums that I read on a regular basis but yet do not take part & post on them but with my membership I feel that if I wished I could partake & also feel involved in things.

Excellent idea - as part of the registration process & for continuing membership - a minimum level of posting is required, perhaps 1 initial post with sign up & then 2 per year. Failure to post means your membership lapses.

A bit low, two per year. I would be looking at something around six per month.
Get folk posting and the world will soon realise this is a site worth visiting.

I disagree with the idea of 6 a month. Perhaps one every couple of months, just to prove to the forums & the world at large that the member is still in existence.

With so many Zero Posters, maybe we should ask ourselves why this is? Is there something wrong with the forums themselves?
Is the subject matter too narrow?

Perhaps we should broaden the topics/forums out into other matters such as local sports, pastimes, local activities that don't get much press coverage or don't have their own very local forum.

For example Burley Cricket Club doesn't have its own website. I'm sure people will have opinions about the cricket - the teams, the opposition, the pitch, the outfield etc. When does the fixture list come out for the coming season?

Burley Trojans website has a forum but no one uses it. Do people have no opinions about the local football team?

Are there fishing matches on the River Wharfe or other local waters? If so - where, when, what was caught, any local winners?

Are there any local astronomers - what can I see in the night sky above Burley (Otley / Ilkley / Menston) - over the next few days?

To all local birdwatchers - what's the rarest bird to be seen in these parts lately? When and where was it seen?

Please add to this list - and post some answers.

Although due to health circumstances I have become an ex angler I could give advice & suggestions as an ex water bailif on the how's, why's, whens & wherefores on this subject including sea angling if such a forum was created,

I remember someone on the i-more.com forum who ran up nearly 4K posts in just over four years.
Granted whoever it was sometimes drove the forum to distraction but it was a regular posting.

Regarding river fishing you may be interested in this

Perhaps something of the same could be done on this forum too.

I was wrong about Burley Cricket Club not having a website - its here http://www.burley-in...c.com/home.html
Burley Trojans Juniors FC has a website: http://www.btjfc.co.uk/ but it doesn't get updated too often.

Its gone very quiet again on this forum ........ perhaps there should be a new rule that moderators should have to post regularly - it would at least give them something to do...............

I haven't been on this forum long enough to know why people are reluctant to post on this one but I am on two others. One is where I live now, after living in Wharfedale for 25 years, the second is where I am probably going next. The main reason for non posting on the first one is that some people take posts personally and reply with abuse etc.
As I said I don't know if that is the case here but it certainly made me a lot more thoughtful about posting when I got a nasty personal insult by way of a reply. The Mods removed it but not until I had seen it first.
One major difference I have noticed - and again correct me if I am wrong because I am new here - but on the other two forums they post asking for advice
on the best plumber, give warnings about oil on the road, ask if anyone has a spare Microwave or an old TV they can give to a scout group or whatever.
The results can be amazing. You read the whole story on the forum, anyone got a TV for the guide hut? Someone offers one. Then the thanks appear, "Cheers for that the TV is installed and showing our first video night on wednesday!"

Sorry. Just explored a little more and found all the stuff I was talking about. Doh! I'll get my coat.

Alternately - Mods - if you want to delete both posts feel free.

Cheers

Perhaps people join to be able to view attachments.

On occasion when I log in from a different computer, at work for example and have not signed in, then I am limited in what I am able to view.

Unless that is due to the outdated browsers our company insists on using but I'm pretty sure it's down to having an account on the forum.

There are a great many more things wrong with the world before this even made it onto the list of things to be bothered about, personally speaking.
