Better a viable (profitable) business - which Woolworths clearly weren't or yet another charity shop.
Oh and just when, exactly, was Woolworths up market?!

In the sixties one could buy all manner of useful quality goods and food from the Ilkley store.
It was also the last in the country to have gas lighting.

It would be a one-stop shop for - every type of food as well as clothing, electricals, gardening, hardware, toys, books etc.
You have to bear in mind that the supermarkets do everything in their big stores - you name it they do it.
You can kiss goodbye to any specialist shops. Smaller shops can't compete with the buying power of the big supermarkets. If a high street or town centre is about a variety of shops & retail outlets, then having a massive supermarket just on the edge would destroy the heart of the town.

Shame about the Tesco's opening the big store up if the majority of people are against it, wont make a difference to my shopping habits personally, suppose it will be seen in time how it does affect the shops in Ilkley centre.. hopefully it wont, as im guessing the things you would normally buy around town you would not buy from the supermarket?

The trouble with a large part of Ilkley is they start shouting after not before there's any major development.
Just watch house prices now.
The Address will soon become The Address that was!

Like the Curate's egg, Wharfedale, good in parts. Pity they haven't thought to include a gents section for clothes. The angling clubs might like the fishing section though. There's some spanking day-glow rods and mega lures. Some household stuff is better than our present shops. I say some because a lot is, well let's say, pound shop but less. Staff are a happy helpful crew though. An in store cafe wouldn't go amiss...........
