I don;t understand why you might be able to climb the little wooden steps of yore, which were steep, several and rickerty, and you cannot manage the one step needed today, less than one foot, or ask the guard for help, he is on the platform to do just that at each stop and has a ramp to help. there is even a sign on the door to tell you where it is. The railways are vastly more disabled-friendly today then ever before, even if cost does limit 100% access for all.

You have made my day steve219! You have to climb into the carriage to see the sign about assistance on climbing into the carriage.

As you well realise, this tale is either a jovial invention or the guard was taking the piss. Others on this thread seem to think you are serious.

A jovial invention!

Perhaps, but whichever such inventions are like old cars, they often backfire.

It takes many years to make inventions, jovial or otherwise, work.

As to the addition of lubrication that may well be the answer. Stick to milk in future.

I don't get it? How could the idea of the train company moving both platforms away from the track be a wind up?

I had heard someone at Leeds station say that they were gradually moving the platforms back as part of a rolling program, so that wider trains could be used on the line.

Because it's a totally nonsensical idea. Train companies don't do work like this, Network Rail does. If they did it there would be diggers and workers around the station for weeks, and you'd see them, and above all hear them... indeed for that very reason they would almost certainly not do the work at night as was suggested. There is absolutely no reason why platforms should be "moved back".

The platforms are due to be lengthened, however, to take longer trains, once the government has decided which ones and when, which decision it keeps deferring.

I heard someone at Leeds stations saying to be careful that surfaces would be slippery because of the wet weather, when the sun was shining... things overhead at stations might not always be true. Longer yes, wider no.

I await a reply from WRUG representative on this one.

I have a reply from WRUG on the above matter:-

I have contacted Northern Rail to ascertain the current position at stations on the Wharfedale Line.

In reply, they have been able to 'confirm that all platforms are within guidelines and tolerances deemed acceptable under current group standards.' They have noted, however, that there is a need to renew the 'Mind the Step' signs on the platform edges, which have become worn; this will be done as soon as possible.

I hope that clears everything up.

As to what the conductor said in the first Northern Rail prefer not to enter into discussion on community sites.
