I think that we are at a point where the number of devices that can access wifi and 3g is now driving demand for faster wireless speeds but neither the consumer or the telcos want to pay a great deal to provide it. BT have adopted an interesting strategy of adding FON and OpenZone to their Home Hubs which can be plotted via this link...

This does of course mean that BT customers may end up sharing their bandwidth with other people, and I do wonder how strong the separation is between the public and private portions of the networks are.
I think that ultimately wifi will take over from 3g, and I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘4g’ ends up actually being shelved in favour of WiMax, but time will tell...

Free wifi is actually an expectation, especially in places like Starbucks or Costa where people expect to be able to work. I not sure its quite as valuable in pubs, but given that its so cheap, it would only take a few pints per month to pay for.
