Tonight another charade will unfold on The Grove, a promenade of music, to be followed by explosive arrangements over our peaceful abodes. Arrangements which few will see in the valley but will rattle everything between Ilkley Moor and Albany Walk.

I feel for you sebastian, now if you lived in Burley you would have really enjoyed our Summer Festival, you should have visited.

Nay not a headache it was an infernal disturbance we could well do with out. A large picture hanging on a wall actually shook before my eyes. You should have felt the shock waves from the first explosion! We were directly below it. It wasn't an act of a god it was an act of selfish folk who think they are entertaining the majority when in actual fact it is the minority, plus some bod who likes to hear his voice amplified across the valley. What a pity our repeesentative on Bradford Council wasn't there to witness it all.

Er, sorry about the duplication, we are still shaken after last night.

Always next year though. A whole year to look

the one up river.

Was it begun with the same sort of intention as the Burley one - to get people out of their houses & to join in whatever was going on?
The Ilkley Festival seems to now divide the community rather than bringing it together.

Way back in time a District Councillor came up with a bright idea to have a Summer Festival. I was a member of Ilkley Town and Tourist Management Committee at the time. Everyone bar one at that particular meeting agreed it was a good idea. I foresaw what would and has happened over the years. Far from getting folk out of their houses few if any knew anything about it such was the level of publicity. I'll not waste time here about what it should have become except those who have seen it's decline will know what I'm on about.
A Festival should be a thing to remember, to bring folk into the town, etc., etc., etc.,
It could have been a great idea.....................

I do believe that Ilkley has a far bigger spread of area in comparrison to Burley & so the community spread could cause the decline at the Ilkley Festival whereas Burley has a smaller spread & so maybe the smaller the community the closer they get, or maybe we have a better sense of go-getting.

He's amazed that the organisers were allowed to do what they did, especially if they hadn't forewarned anybody about it - in particular those residents who would be directly affected.

The Burley Summer Festival has had 2 very successful years. The goodish weather has helped, but the activities put on have been a good mix of indoor & outdoor events, with appeal to pretty much all ages.
If its agreed to hold another - even now, that isn't a foregone conclusion - then we need to learn from the experiences of others i.e. not make the same mistakes or misjudgments that other organisations have made.

With the right input it could have become a Summer Spectacular but there was too much ego tripping by a few. The first year's Continental Market was truly continental apart from the crew who put it on. Each year after it has declined into something short of a farce. It should not be on one of Ilkley's main shopping streets either, the central car park is big enough to take it. This year an Ilkley trader, who begged to remain annonymous, took five quid on the Market Saturday. Normally they would take upwards of £1500 on a good Saturday.
A couple of years ago certain Ilkley traders were allowed to have stalls on The Grove, I say certain because there were many who only found the truth when they walked between the stalls. Someone 'forgot' to drop leaflets to the rest of our traders.
The Market apart few knew what was going on in the early days. Those who put it on kept saying there was plenty of info on the InterNet or in Ilkley Gazette, forgetting a vast majority of folk in Ilkley are not on the Net, don't buy the Gazette, I could go on and on, let's just say there is/was a breakdown in communication.
This being the www I wish not put up a great deal because there are many hard working folk who have made parts of it into a silk slipper instead of a sow's ear. I do have ideas which Burley could take on which would really bring your community together. I've mentioned them to the Ilkley crew and they didn't want to know. More fool them.
Drop me a pm and we could possibly meet up later to discuss ideas.
Burley has a lot going for it. Just a pity Ilkley can't see it has too.
