I believe it's fertilizer... Others will be able to identify it more exacty, but it's something along those lines.
Once we had eaten all the animals and bartered all our jewels we started to worry.....

Pretty big fire, judging by the smoke visible from the Chevin, fire to the North of the bypass.

wasn't sure if it was something they had put on the fields but its pretty choking whatever it is, maybe its down to the smoke by the bypass, just seen a police van pulling out of iron row..maybe they were checking it out?

Has anybody found out what has happened & what caused the stench, it was so strong in my area that I could hardly breath.

Yeap - I can answer that one!

I rang the police and British Gas last night - both reported receiving several calls about the smell. Later in the evening a guy from the Gas Board - sorry Gas Company (showing my age - Posted Image) call to say it was muck spreading (for muck read raw sewage) in Farnley of all places. Because of the still night the smell hung in the valley but was drifting slowing up the valley. He was checking for gas leaks as people reported the smell as gas and was going next to Ilkley as the "cloud" spread up the valley. Poor bloke, it seemed to be a bit of a pointless exercise knowing what the smell was but I think he was duty bound to check out all the calls!!

So there you have it, I guess now harvest is over farmers are putting back into the soil what the plants have taken out - true recycling!

It seems the smell may be cuased by a significant heap of manure being stored (and built up)in the open near Iron Row.

I'm looking in to this, so if anyone has further information please let me know.

Thanks

Matt

It's been piled up there for the last few years, a contractor brings fresh supplies and takes away the rotted down stuff and blasts it onto various fields in the area.

All totally legitimate and part of living in a rural area.

Not good for the cattle and sheep in the same field though as I believe disease can be passed on from bacteria harbouring in the dung heap.

It seems highly unlikely that this would be the source of the acrid smell.  The manure heap originates from Ilkley way - a mix of horse & cattle excrement plus straw.  I think the residents of Great Pasture, plus anybody who walks to the "Stones" via this route, would have complained about it, before now.

Unlikely? but true.

Why not venture in that direction and smell for yourself?

A stinking rotting heap of excrement just waiting to be complained about by those who don't understand the ways of the countryside.

I think I'll stick with the smell being chicken sh*te in Farnley, as the prevailing winds on that day were (unusually) from the north east, rather than the normal westerly winds.  The farmer in Farnley was just unlucky to choose that day to do what he needed to do.  Any other day & folks round here would have been none the wiser.

That was the smell a couple of weeks ago, this is now. Stretch your legs and constrict your nostrils and take a look!

Who is judging the "whats that smell" competition. Whats the prize ? As much dung as you can spread.

My entry into the competition is the smell is the effect of a Spicy Ranch
