Was at Harlow Carr today for an Apple Identification session.
A friend has a number of old apples in their garden but without
labels. It was truly fascinating watching and learnig from real
Apple Experts. I also made contact with a former Horticulturist
of many years ago.
This is where you come in, especially gardeners and garden societies
in the valley. An ochard of rare varieties had to be grubbed out to
make way for a car park. They have languished at Harlow ever since.
However it being an exposed, north facing site, they are slowly being
lost.
For some reason the Gardens aren't interested in their fate. If Geoff
had still been alive things might be different. We can't afford to lose
these trees. So I put to fellow gardeners out there to contact Harlow
Carr and see if the trees can be given a more favourable place to grow.
Please don't leave it till they are no more, they are as much a part of
our heritage as old buildings and the like.
For more info on Apple varieties have a look at another friend's site

Here's an idea - there is a plan for a community orchard in part of Burley House Field. Perhaps they could be put to good use there?
