When I was a lad & crime & vandalism was nowhere near as rife as it is today there were 2 regular policemen delegated to the village full time & they even built 2 brand new policemens houses nearly opposite to the end of Sun Lane one of which had a built in police office attached.
What have we now, a couple of PSCO's who have to very (stress on the very) occaisionaly walk round the village together (presumably for safety reasons).
I have worked for WYP for a number of years although as a civilian employee not an officer, yesterday I along with hundreds of other support staff received a letter which states my role is now deleted and I will be subject to 90 days notice. (not even a christmas card and a bottle of cheap wine..but thats budget cuts for you!!)
anyway in my opinion (yes thats my own opinion and not that of WYP or any of its associated parter agencies etc etc blah blah) where are the officers and the pcsos? well probably sitting in offices doing all the jobs that the support staff should be doing!
someone has to work in the control room on the radio's and those 999 calls don't answer themselves, someone has to makesure they all get paid etc etc.(its not like the Bill really! although even that got axed!) So the "big plan" for the "big society" is to protect the front line at all costs, and rightly so, the public pay for the service and they should be able to feel safe in their communities and expect someone to be at the other end of that desperate 999 call. and there always will be, only chances are in future it could be an officer getting paid twice as much as the support staff who used to do the job.
meanwhile an old lady gets mugged in a town centre or some drunk is abusing the staff in the local shop, where are the police well erm PC Smith is doing some filing and PC Jones is on the phone and PC Bloggs is just reporting the dripping tap in the gents!
To be fair, the vast majority of police officers do an amazing Job and want to do nothing less than the job they joined up to do,
they face potentially dangerous situations on a daily basis, albeit probably not in Burley! they deserve the the money they are paid. the "protect the front line" and "reduce the back office" plan probably looks good on paper the next few years will show how it works in practice. In my opinion those officers who for whatever reason are no longer capable of working on the front line should be offered a support staff role at a support staff salary or medical retirement which then would maybe allow for more recruitment of officers and a better service to the public. What I begrudge is the officer who does the same job as me (think he broke his arm in 1983) but for 15k more, I will be made redundant but he won't. the sad thing is I could have done the work of both of us and saved 15K
In saying all that Burley does have a very dedicated and well organised neighbourhood policing team, there were a number of Burglaries recently in one night but the burglars were soon caught and dealt with and we all have the opurtunity to attend one of the local NPT meetings to raise any concerns.
but as my wife was also made redundant yesterday we probably wont be able to afford to live here anymore anyway! hey ho worse things happen!
does anyone know of any flats to rent in manningham preferably without the metal sheeting on the windows!
