Monday morning (06-12-2010). I went to the platform 2 (going to Leeds/ Bradford). A stack of free newspapers had been set alight. They were dated friday 3rd december.

I would never have expected that Burley has such degenerate yobs in its community. Why do we let this happen. It must have happened on Friday/ Sat.

Be alert.

Well the poor darlings would have been warm last night because they burnt the chip shops wheelie bin down to the ground.
This will cost the owner £400 to replace, I also believe they have defaced/wrecked the Cenotaph, they want stringing up by their toes and slapping hard!!

Slapping hard?? thats what we as kids used to get from the village bobbies for minor misdemeanors such as tying a door handle to nextdoors, but defacing the tribute to soldiers who have given their lives to keep this country free is absolutely a digusting vile act & if caught should be given nothing less than a prison sentence.

This makes my blood boil. Where are the absent police, community support. Its getting worse.

CCTV for all the village. And if they are caught, they should be named and shamed

I fear the absence of police is another example of resources being diverted elsewhere no doubt because there are more serious things to police in Bradford somewhere and Burley is not regarded as important. We now have a thread "Should Burley Leave Bradford Mdc". If we could (and I am not sure if it is possible but Matt seems to favour it)I have no idea what effect it would have on policing.

I don't really want CCTV all over the place. I would like to see some real policemen (not the community sort) actually wandering about the village now and again on a Friady or Saturday night. I did actually see a police car on Friday night in Burley but I expect they were just looking out for motorists to breathalise. Easier to catch the odd errant motorist (although I bet there are not many round Burley) than tackle real crime/vandalism/antisocial behaviour. I wonder how often they randomly stop vehicles on Manningham Lane or Leeds Road in Bradford to check for insurance/MOTs etc!

When I was a lad & crime & vandalism was nowhere near as rife as it is today there were 2 regular policemen delegated to the village full time & they even built 2 brand new policemens houses nearly opposite to the end of Sun Lane one of which had a built in police office attached.

What have we now, a couple of PSCO's who have to very (stress on the very) occaisionaly walk round the village together (presumably for safety reasons).

I have worked for WYP for a number of years although as a civilian employee not an officer, yesterday I along with hundreds of other support staff received a letter which states my role is now deleted and I will be subject to 90 days notice. (not even a christmas card and a bottle of cheap wine..but thats budget cuts for you!!)

anyway in my opinion (yes thats my own opinion and not that of WYP or any of its associated parter agencies etc etc blah blah) where are the officers and the pcsos? well probably sitting in offices doing all the jobs that the support staff should be doing!

someone has to work in the control room on the radio's and those 999 calls don't answer themselves, someone has to makesure they all get paid etc etc.(its not like the Bill really! although even that got axed!) So the "big plan" for the "big society" is to protect the front line at all costs, and rightly so, the public pay for the service and they should be able to feel safe in their communities and expect someone to be at the other end of that desperate 999 call. and there always will be, only chances are in future it could be an officer getting paid twice as much as the support staff who used to do the job.

meanwhile an old lady gets mugged in a town centre or some drunk is abusing the staff in the local shop, where are the police well erm PC Smith is doing some filing and PC Jones is on the phone and PC Bloggs is just reporting the dripping tap in the gents!

To be fair, the vast majority of police officers do an amazing Job and want to do nothing less than the job they joined up to do,
they face potentially dangerous situations on a daily basis, albeit probably not in Burley! they deserve the the money they are paid. the "protect the front line" and "reduce the back office" plan probably looks good on paper the next few years will show how it works in practice. In my opinion those officers who for whatever reason are no longer capable of working on the front line should be offered a support staff role at a support staff salary or medical retirement which then would maybe allow for more recruitment of officers and a better service to the public. What I begrudge is the officer who does the same job as me (think he broke his arm in 1983) but for 15k more, I will be made redundant but he won't. the sad thing is I could have done the work of both of us and saved 15K

In saying all that Burley does have a very dedicated and well organised neighbourhood policing team, there were a number of Burglaries recently in one night but the burglars were soon caught and dealt with and we all have the opurtunity to attend one of the local NPT meetings to raise any concerns.

but as my wife was also made redundant yesterday we probably wont be able to afford to live here anymore anyway! hey ho worse things happen!

does anyone know of any flats to rent in manningham preferably without the metal sheeting on the windows!

Hi Lee

Sorry to hear about whats happened. I think people should know exactly whats going on.

I work in public service as well. They are talking about protecting the front line, but in reality the cuts are gonna come, leaving those left to shoulder the burden.

What should be happening is to cut waste, cut the made up jobsworths, mostly tiers of management for "special projects". But its those heafty salaries who are being tasked with making the cuts (unlikely they will cut themselves).

The point is - and keeping to the thread - Services will suffer. Crime, health, education, will get worse. And the effort by those left will be to fudge the figures so it doesnt appear that bad.

The fact that some little towrags could deface a memorial to those who fought and died for this country should make everyone's blood boil. And if someone catches them, they should be taught a lesson in respect.
