I was looking for something on Facebook about Ilkley Moor and came upon a video from a chap who said he lived beside Ilkley Moor. A bit of detective work showed he lived in your village - Burley, which is beside Burley Moor. This individual then said he was going to seek out the Twelve Apostle stones on Ilkley Moor, which anyone knowing even the slightest bit about the area could have told him they are on Burley Moor. Again we have someone who should know better calling the larger Rombalds Moor - Ilkley Moor - perhaps members of the Ramblers Association in your village would seek out this video and it's maker and inform them of the truth. While you're at it please inform that the baths at White Wells are not Roman. There is a very well researched book on the history of White Wells obtainable at The Grove Book Shop, Ilkley or White Wells on Ilkley Moor.

I have come across this a lot recently while doing some research of the moors. I've even seen "official" websites & documents - from which you would expect it to have been double-checked - clearly quoting 'Twelve Apostles, Ilkley Moor.' This is truly misleading and very poor standards. It seems that some glory seekers are after Burley's famous pride-and-joy for themselves! Why is this false information being published so much?

It's quite simple really. Folk are too idle to research for themselves so pick up the nearest book that looks something like and add to the already badly researched item. Granted the Victorians were a dab hand at the romantics when it came to bringing visitors to the fold. But that is no excuse for folk down the line to continue such. Then you have some bod re-write the local Bye-Laws without actually going out to survey the areas and the en product is worthy of a Monty Python film. My favourite is going into a Tourist Information Office and asking where on Ilkley Moor those stones are. Or which is the largest Rombalds Moor or Ilkley Moor. That usually confuses the issue. But getting away from this there is a very sound reason for those who should know in doing so. Consider a visitor to the area is on the tops and has an accident. The emergency services ask, always assuming they have a mobile, where on the Moor they are. Those who know the area are aware of which Moor is which. I hope! But does our visitor? They are but a few reasons for getting the facts right about Burley, Ilkley and Rombalds Moors.
