Yes, but if adequate Parking restrictions are put into force then this problem could be solved!

It wasn't a question, merely a statement about the matter.
However on another note, does anyone know what is happening to the Garage on Bradford Road as it closes on Monday?

Tesco Express in Ilkley or Bp in Menston/Guiseley. Maybe as Tesco sold the Malt on to a Wetherby Wailer they've bought the garage to make another express store. But don't hold me to that one!

So Tesco did buy The Malt if only for a very short time and Wetherby Whaler! There used to be one of those at the lower end of Wetherby. Is it one and the same? It would be a likely move for them to open another express there and it's well away from the village so shouldn't be too much of a problem for local outlets. A case of watch that space I suppose.

Yes Tesco did buy it but for some unforeseen reason (possibly the chance to buy the Garage?)sold it on. The fish and chip Restaurant chain yes, they are spreading all over at the moment. I guess you are right we shall see in time.

Going back quite a few years now I seem to remember a Burley haulier marrying into the family who own the Whaler. Or if not marrying a close relationship. Trouble is I can't remember his name at the moment..

I have received letters from supermarkets interested in Burley, but not from Tesco. I'm not aware of anything, but then there's no reason why they'd tell me.

The big question is whether we want a retail centre to our village or not, and if so how we protect it.

If we lose the co-op (which we may, as the current site is just not suitainable and can't be fixed) the door will be wide open for another retailer - and they won't be interested in the co-op's current site. They will be far more likley to look at the edge of the village where they can pick up passing traffic, too.

If we lose the village-centre store and get one on the edge of the village, people won't be walking past the other shops and many of them will quickly close. Once that happens the rest will be unsustainable. We need to keep a major retailer in the village centre so the other shops can keep trading.

Definately a problem, though no easy solution. It looked like the library plan might be an option but the developer messed up and didn't address the issues, so it fell on planning. I did warn them that would happen - I met them the week before and told them to withdraw it and take the time to address the issues, and then resubmit - they promised they'd keep me informed, then failed to do so. I'm still waiting for them to get in touch.

However they wouldn't listen and just ploughed on regardless. Unfortunately the co-op is very hands off (I don't have direct contact since their regional manger 'moved on') and it seems the developers just aren't interested in reality - which is that, if you want to do a controversial development in a conservation area, you have to listen to the planners and the community, not just pay lip service then return to digging your hole.

Its in all our interests to keep a major retailer in the centre of the village. I'd like to keep the co-op, but they are not exactly helping themselves at the moment. That's a real shame.

We really need a retailer who will work with the community, and I had hoped the co-op would do that.

Who knows, maybe they will read this and return my email or pick up the phone as promised? Co-op management do read this forum, what a pity they don't like to talk.

I will try to get in touch again next week and will let you know if I get a response.

Why the obsession with the Co-op. They have not convinced many they could not make any improvements to the current store. They had the chance to listen and understand the concerns of the majority and Bradford planning but seem to be stuck on a failing idea. It is inevitable a clever retailer will get it right eventually and as long as they are in an acceptable location that considers the traffic issues and local shops then success is assured. An edge of village site could be acceptable and must not be discounted. This would allow local shops a greater chance of survival and the centre of the village to maintain its unique traditional and recreational ambience as required in a conservation area.
