It will be difficult whatever business takes the premises, as they will have to be considerate to the people upstairs. So actually with early mornings I suppose a bakery would be a no, although something that would be a rather nice addition to the village.

my very limited knowledge of the wonderful world of planning leads me to believe that we should at least be spared another take away (I hope)
what about residential ?

What's the matter with the Wharfedale Deli, it does the most delicious bread I have ever had, and a very good selection of other stuff.... we do need to support the shops we have, there might well not be another retailer able to take over a space as big as the Co-op but we must preserve the ones we have by using them as much as possible.

I totally agree about using our local shops I do about half my shopping in the village, but to be honest I can't really see a retailer taking on the empty Coop either, thats if they do get permission for the library & move out.
I also can't see residential being an option but perhaps offices might work.
Not sure how it would be left after the Coop, hopefully not just boarded up, but who knows.

agreed, totally!!
It occurred to me, did there not used to be a massage parlour in the village... not if there were to be a rumour that that was coming back how lively would this forum get... the co-op would be the perfect place, ho ho....
Agreed, seriously, that another new retailer is unlikely in the present climate, I have always fancied running an up market wine shop myself.

I have recolection of a Gent's hairdressers, a wallpaper shop, I think a paper/sweet shop, a Greengrocers and some form of Club. Peace's wet fish shop, or was that next door to the Cheshire Cat.

Yes there was a massage parlour in Burley, it's entry was situated in the passageway next to the greengrocers by the fountain, it was on the upper floor above what used to be Jack Ker's barbers.

Almost correct!, from the Methodist Manse at the corner of Manse Road (now a nursery)going downhill was Miss Joy's greegrocers, then the Liberal club for which I think still has the name carved in stone above the door of the now Indian takeaway, Dales decorators shop, Clifford Cole's newsagents, Nobby Clarkes barbers, Bower's bakery, & then across the end of Aireville Terrace was Peace's wet fish shop & then the Cheshire Cat cafe/sweet shop.
Another little known fact is that before the now toilet facilities that the gentlemans urinals was placed at the western side of the Park gates (by the Cenotaph) & the ladies toilets were on the eastern corner of the same gates & these facilities were still there for many years after their closure boarded up but still had the penny slot door locks complete with the money still in them untill they were demolished.
