Haven't been to Burley Chippy for a while, but seem to remember that they're pretty good. But if I recall correctly they do only fry in oil. Are there any proper chippys locally still using Beef Dripping?

well thank the lord - a new topic not coop related!

haven't a clue what they fry in, but it's a good chippy and (from someone brought up on Glaswegian Italian chippys) believe me that is a compliment !

An interesting subject and one to bring out memories from the older members of the community. I can remember the chippy in Peel Place and the other near the Queens Head but somewhere I have a picture of one nearer the east end of the village and I do remember someone saying Burley once had four chippies. It reminds me of my colleage days when we would go to Tadcaster for our fish and two pen'orth. There were three chippies there. One did great chips, equally another for fish and the third for cakes - fish cakes that is. None of them quite got it all together.

The nearest chippy using beef dripping I can find on the web is The Tenants Arms at Kilnsey.

A little further up the Dale and The Buck Inn is open again.

There was a Chippie in Peel Place (this was the favourite) then one next to the Salem Chapel, one named Mason's in the entry next to what was Darbysons & then for a short while there was one opened just below the Weslyan Schoolrooms (now a nursery).

In spite, and because of, the usual tendency of this forum to go off topic, I would add that any connoisseur of fish and chips would know immediately that this chippy does use beef dripping.

It worries me that misinformation can sometimes take precedence over reality even on a subject as humble as this one.

Err, I think that's the whole point of the forum, for someone to raise a query and someone to address it! No misinformation intended. As i said, "if I recall correctly", and obviously I didn't!

You make me nostalgic and my mouth water.

I've been living on my own now for over two years, and I don't have a car, and just about the only thing I miss is a freshly cooked newspaper of Yorkshire fish and chips, no matter what fat it's fried in. (Or a Chinese, or a country pub...)

This year we seem to have lost our ice cream van, and when he does come round he seems to have been stopped from playing his welcoming chime so there's no chance of stopping him for a quick cone. Another pleasure lost.

Still, there are compensations.

So many things we used to enjoy have been outlawed because folk don't like the noise, don't understand fish and two pennorth are not the same in anything but the Yorkshire Post. Don't understand our beer has to have some clout. Life must be so boring for young folk these days. There's not even Silver Cross pram wheels anymore. And if folk don't know what they used to be used for ask your grandpa's......

Cheer up there's always the dawn chorus to look forward to.

One last thought. Does anyone remember when chippies started selling curry sauce?
