Ticket Machine For The Train

Aparently, if you dont have a ticket you pay full fare and "may be prosecuted" for not having a valid ticket.
The train company no doubt realise that by not having cash, there is less chance of people breaking into the machine. But tough, if you dont have/ or want to use a credit card.
Why not have a proper card/ cash option.
Also, I see that northern rail are back to cancelling trains again too. Service - what service
Another lack of investment, lack of choice. And when the trains are busy, they choose NOT to check tickets (at least from leeds to guiseley anyway)

Of course it's illegal to travel without a valid ticket, if you have avoided getting one when you could... would you try and not pay on the bus, or get on a flight without a ticket, or drive off without paying for petrol, so why not the same on the train?
Not checking tickets is an issue, but the guards seem to take the view that out of Leeds "all" passengers will have passed through the barrier, and so must have a ticket. Not quite true, of course.
Well, at least having a ticket machine is something, there are some stations in Manchester with far fewer passengers than Burley which have a staffed ticket office.
At least we get an extra morning and evening peak trains from December 12, and more seats on some other trans, too.
Like it or not, we are fortunate to have one of the best services outside of London.

I do like the trains. I use them a lot. DO YOU ?
it costs £3.25 from Burley to Leeds. Less to Guiseley, or to Ilkley costs less.
My point, Steve - is that for the last 10 years I've used the train, and its much simpler to pay cash for one or two stops, rather than card. And what happens if you dont have a credit card.
And yes, I've used the bus. I can imagine the response if i pulled out a credit card.
My only point, was that we have the new ticket machine (by the way Burley used to have one) but unless you have a credit card and want to pop £3.25 on it (or £5.60 return) then you wont have a valid ticket and would be traveling without a valid ticket.
Its easier when there is NOT a ticket machine, as you cant be expected to purchase a ticket.
And with all the technology in the world, it is possible to have a machine that does both (have a look at the blank panel on the machine, where change could be issued).

Fair point, I agree it's daft not to have a money taking machine, but there is a lot of daft things on the railway. All stations in Manchester that have passenger numbers more than half that of Burleys' are staffed...
and yes, I use the trains, a lot, I don't have a car and I have connections with the railways. I specifically live where I do to be within easy walk of the station.
In reply to the other post, my guess as to why there is no £1 concession ticket is that this facility ceases this weekend, so there would have been no point writing the software to enable it for just a couple of weeks.
Cheers!!

No problem, if you don't have a credit card you can't pay before hand, similarly, if, like me you are unable to use the machine. And this is another daft part of the railways. the conductors on some train operators, like Northern, are very relaxed about such matters and allow payment on trains without demur, they even willingly sell tickets for onward journeys, but others are very strict and take offence at the slightest perceived transgression.... at least if you can use the machine you save yourself the possibility of having to queue to buy a ticket in order to get through the barriers at Leeds.

Thanks for the info. I'll stick to the bus. Though looking at my travel record it was 15 years since last going to Bradford, 10 for Shipley, Much the same for Leeds by rail. There's everything I need in Ilkley and used to be Burley and if I can't get something I can do without it.

Great result!
P.S. I may be a luddite - but even if you don't have a credit card, surely you have a debit card these days? I thought all cashpoint cards are now debit cards?
