Hello,
I am just wondering if anyone knows of any desk space that is available locally (ideally for free)? I am just going into my second year of a PhD and I work from home as my University is too far away and it is expensive to travel there frequently. I am beginning to find it a bit lonely working from home everyday and am trying to think of ways to make it work a bit better for me in 2012. I am also working to set up a business at the same time, so I might fit into inclusion criteria for desk space that is subsidised to help start-up businesses. I have my own laptop and phone etc.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks
Local Desk Space - Ideas?

What an interesting idea.
Are we allowed to know what your PhD is and type of business you are aspireing to? That might it easier for folk to help.

Hi there, dunno if your problem is solved but I might be able to help....let me know if you're still looking for space and we can go from there. I wouldn't want paying, but I do need someone who might be interested on giving one of my dogs an hour's brisk walk each day in exchange....? Cheers, Jill

Oops, forgot to check the 'follow this post' option before posting, hence this post to do that!

Sorry for my late response.
Thank you Jill - I have sent you a personal message so we can hopefully meet up for a chat!
Sebastian - my PhD is looking at how Government Departments use (economic) evidence when making investment prioritisation decisions. Unfortunately very relevant given the recent austerity cuts. I am setting up a business focused on events management with my family.
I do think it would be great if there was a room with hot desks (and plugs) available somewhere in Burley that enabled people who want to set up a business/who work from home to have somewhere to meet up, share ideas and maybe even swap skills/work together/employ the services of local businesses. Working from home can be lonely for people and it could be a good way to support local businesses/increase business start-up rates locally which is good for us all. I'm sure a reasonable rate could be charged to cover the costs.

Thank you and what a brilliant idea too. The en-product, you're PhD, sounds even more interesting.

I have just found this - the first event is Thursday 8th March at 2pm and the plan is to meet up once a month (or more if people want to):
Do you work from home? Are you interested in meeting others in the same position in a relaxed environment? I am a local freelance translator and would like to break the solitude of working from home by organising a regular 'Jelly' . Vicars Bistro in Saltaire have been kind enough to offer to host such an event. A jelly is an informal co-working event where freelancers, home workers and small/micro business owners bring their laptop or other work and work, chat and collaborate with other small business owners (http://www.uk-jelly..../what-is-jelly/). If you think you might be interested, please send me an email at ruth@ruthbartlett-traduction.com or call me on 07858 564799.

Thanks for the info but it's not my style and out of my area too.
However I'll think more about it and drop you a line later for more
info. Other may well be able to use it.
